Health Matters

November is Diabetes Month

CDC reports no cure yet for diabetes; but healthy lifestyle reduces its impact.

The Basics

1 out of 4 don't know they have diabetes. Two main types:

Type 1 - The body can't make insulin so you need to take it every day.

Type 2 - The body doesn't use insulin well and is unable to keep blood sugar at normal levels. Risk factors for type 2 include:

                   Age 45 years or older.

V  A parent, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes.

V  Being physically active less than 3 times a week.

V  Past gestational diabetes or giving birth to 9+# baby.

You've Been Diagnosed with Diabetes.

Now What?

It's a Balancing Act:   Food – Activity – Medicine - Blood Sugar Levels—you can do it. Manage your diabetes throughout the day by  Following a Healthy Eating Plan:

V  Getting physically active - 10 to 20 minutes a day is

better than only an hour once a week

V     Taking diabetes medicine as prescribed

V  Testing your blood sugar regularly

November is Prematurity Awareness month. It's when the March of Dimes focuses everyone's attention on the serious problem of premature birth.

"A healthy pregnancy and baby are a blessing. But some families have their hopes and dreams crushed when their baby arrives too soon, too small and very sick.

Visit  to learn about Premature and the Signs of Preterm Labor and ways it may be prevented."
