What is Depression?

According to the CDC, Depression is a serious medical illness and an important public health issue for all ages. Depression is characterized by persistent sadness and sometimes irritability (particularly in children) and is one of the leading causes of disease or injury worldwide for both men and women.  Depression is treatable.

Many people who experience depression also have other mental health conditions.  Anxiety disorders often go hand in hand with depression.  People who have anxiety disorders struggle with intense and uncontrollable feelings of anxiety, fear, worry, and/or panic. How often symptoms occur, how long they last, and how intense they may feel can be different for each person.

Symptoms of depression include:

V  Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism

V  Lasting sad, anxious or "empty" mood

V  Feelings of guilt, worthless or helpless

V  Loss of interest in hobbies and activities

V  Loss of energy; concentration and making decisions

V  Difficulty falling asleep or sleeping too much

V  Overeating or loss of appetite

V  Suicidal or homicidal thoughts or attempts

V  Aches or pains that do not get better with treatment
