President Barack Obama became the first black president in the history of the United States on Jan. 20 - 21, 2009.   He was re-elected for a second term and took the oath of Office on Jan. 21, 2013.  Obama took the oath of office on the bible of Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  

African American History

Black History Celebrations Theme for the year.  Since 1926, The Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (ASALH) has established the national theme for the month long celebration. The National Theme for the celebration in the year 2014 is "Civil Rights in America."
